Corporate History

Founder

Tetsuo Takahashi, the father of C.T.Takahashi ( Charles Ted Takahashi) immigrated to USA in 1892, and established Oriental Trading Company in 1898 as one of the founders.

In those days, there was a rush of construction of rail ways in USA. Oriental Trading Company dealt with mediating workers from Japan and China for railway laying construction of Great Northern Pacific Railways from Chicago to Seattle and also selling general goods.

Ted Takahashi succeeded the company from his father in 1926. At that time, railway construction had almost finished, so the business of the company changed to exporting of logs, lumber, or scrap to Japan. Next year, for the Chinese market succeeded from his father, he established China Import & Export Company to deal with grain, flour, lumber etc. for China.

Escalating to World War Ⅱ from starting the US-Japan War 1942, Japanese people including Japanese American Citizens were forced to move to incarceration camps located in inland and then all their enterprises dealing with Japan were forced to be closed or to be sold.

After finishing World War Ⅱ, Ted Takahashi re-started China Import & Export Company in 1946. And then he established C.T.Takahashi & Co., Inc. for trading with Japan. The business of “China import and export” continued until 1949. As China became People’s republic of China, trading with China had completely vanished.

In 1948, C.T.Takahashi established USA-Japan import and export liaison office in “Marunouchi-Building” (commonly called “Maru Buil”) in Tokyo so as to research the information preparing for re-starting to import and export between USA and Japan, even when Japan was controlled under administration of GHQ and private enterprise were not allowed to import or export.

In 1952, the year of taking effect of San Francisco Peace Treaty, C.T.Takahashi & Co., Ltd. our company was established.
